Shots used in TV Dramas

Holby City
Whilst watching Holby City I made a note of several different shots and what they represented. I first noticed an establishing shot, this showed me that Holby City is set at a hospital in an urban area as the surrounding buildings were tall and looked like offices. Shot reverse shot was used to show a shot looking down on a man and the reverse shot looking up at the other man talking to him this made one man look powerful and the other man look weak. Close up shots were used too one shot showed a women crying this ensured that the audience saw the full emotion of this womens face and this makes the audience feel more sorry for the women . Medium shot was used starting at the characters feet and panning up to his face, this shot gives him authority. I later found out that this man was the head of the hospital which is why that shot was used. He was also wearing a suit and had a bright light shone on him which made him seem more superior to the people he passes. A long shot was used to show the full length and width of a glossy red car, this angle tries to make the audience fall in love with car like the characters do. A two shot of two people talking ensured the audience could see all the reations of the characters. A medium close-up to a close-up shot was used as scary effect as it jumped from a medium close-up to a close-up to zoom in on a women who was lying on the floor.

Emma
Emma was a completly different TV Drama to Holby City as Emma is a period drama. Therefore it is interesting to compare the different use of shots. At the begining of Emma an establishing shot was used to show that the TV Drama Emma is set in a rural area as in this shot you can see fields and trees and also that it was set in a different era as there is a man in the shot who is wearing old fashioned clothing and holding a cane. There is also an old fashioned looking mansion in the shot. A mid shot showed a women playing the piano however this was an image in one of the characters minds and there is an extremly bright light on the lady playing to piano to create an unrealistic and dream like effect. A two shot showed one girl in the background crying and another girl (Emma) sitting closer to the camera looking at her. This makes the audience also want to see what Emma is looking at as well as making the audience feel sorry for the girl who is crying. Another mid shot was taken from a low angle looking up at a women entering a church. The shot was taken through the heads of other people sitting down. This made her seem more superior to the other people sitting down. She is also wearing a bright yellow dress which contributes to how she appears more superior to the other characters. Another mid shot was of a women sitting in the front row of a church and two other women sitting behind her but to the left so that the audience can see all three characters. The two girls sitting behind are talking about the women sitting in front. This makes the audience feel as though they know more than the characters because the girl in front can't see the girls behind her talking, however the girls talking cannot see the women infront's reaction. One mid shot is taken from a low angle looking up at Emma. She is dressed up nicely and from this the audience can depict that this angle was used to make the audience notice something different about her and notice that she looked nicer than usual. This shot also gives her more authority and elegance. After watching Emma I realised how many mid shots were used, I think this is because the director wanted to give the audience a real idea of what this time period was like for example to show the characters full outfits, the scenary, the houses etc.
