Mise en scene

Three-point lighting This image from Titanic has a three-point lighting. There is light coming from behind the stairs which is the backlighting, there is light coming from the left of the photo which is the key light and there is also a lamp shade and this is the fill light as it is dimmer. The three-point lighting creates different shadows and relflections in this shot which adds to the caotic scene.
Setting I chose this image from the Wizard of Oz for show the use of setting. This shot has been filmed in a studio as the setting is stylised and fake. This shot indicates that this scene is in a pretend fictional place as the setting is unrealistic.

Low-key lightingThis image from Harry Potter has a low-key lighting. This is so that the shot look scary and frightening and suggests that the characters can't see where they are going.
Lighting This image from the movie Clockwork orange is a good example of lighting. The only light in this shot is the back light therefore not allowing the audience to see the characters faces. This use of light creates the effect that the characters are dangerous, mysterious and sinister. The large silote shadows make the characters seem bigger and scarier than they are. There is also a tramp in the frame which also makes the characters seem more powerful as the tramp is lying on the floor. The image has a high contrast which makes the character look bolder and sharper.

High-key lighting This image from Dreamgirls has been brightly lit. This is because the characters are performing on a stage therefore the lighting is brighter to create the effect.
Costumes and make-upThe image is from the film the Phantom of the opera. The costumes in this frame are obvious and showy and this film was set in the early 20th century and therefore people dressed more extravagantly. The womens costume is cultural and helps set the scene for the movie.

Composition
I chose this shot from The Godfather to show use of composition. This image has been framed so that the audience can see all of the man's body but only the womens face. This framing creates the effect that he is more powerful and important than her. The fact that she is sitting on the floor holding his hand while he sits on a chair not even looking at her suggests that she looks up to him and the composition shows this literally as she is looking up to him from the floor.

Colour and tone
I chose this example from the Shawshank redemption for colour and tone. The frame has been given a blue tint to create a cold and gloomy effect, it also quite grainy and the colours look naturalistic.

Acting and figure movement

This photo from the movie The Hangover is a good example for acting and figure movement as the characters have been choreographed within the frame to look as though they dont want to be with each other as they are standing apart and looking away, and it is clear from their body language and expressions that they are in a crisis. The audience knows this because one of the men has a baby, another looks hungover and the other man is holding ice to his mouth.

Analysis of camerawork

As well as analysising different shots from an episode from Holby City, in class we analyised the camerawork from one scene. The first shot in this scene was a medium long shot of two nurses talking about a neurotic patient who was in the next room. The show was the taken from the doorway of the room the patient was in to show how close the nurses were to the patient they were talking about. The next shot that I analysed in this scene was of the nurse talking to the neurotic patient. It was a medium close up shot and showed the expression on the nurses face. This was important as the audience needed to see that all though the nurse was kind she was too busy to be dealing with small problems. The next shot was a mid shot of the patients boyle under her arm. This ensured the audience could see her problem however not make the audience look away from the screen. The next shot in this scene was a long shot of a doctor and boss walking and talking down a hospital hallway. The long shot was used to give them authority as they are more important than the nurses and also to show that they were not wearing uniform like most of the people who work at hospitals. The last shot I analysed was a master shot of the two nurses talking to the neurotic patient. This shot gave the audience a view from a 3rd person position and showed the audience how the nurses were trying to edge away from the patient who was annoying them.

Shots used in TV Dramas

Holby City
Whilst watching Holby City I made a note of several different shots and what they represented. I first noticed an establishing shot, this showed me that Holby City is set at a hospital in an urban area as the surrounding buildings were tall and looked like offices. Shot reverse shot was used to show a shot looking down on a man and the reverse shot looking up at the other man talking to him this made one man look powerful and the other man look weak. Close up shots were used too one shot showed a women crying this ensured that the audience saw the full emotion of this womens face and this makes the audience feel more sorry for the women . Medium shot was used starting at the characters feet and panning up to his face, this shot gives him authority. I later found out that this man was the head of the hospital which is why that shot was used. He was also wearing a suit and had a bright light shone on him which made him seem more superior to the people he passes. A long shot was used to show the full length and width of a glossy red car, this angle tries to make the audience fall in love with car like the characters do. A two shot of two people talking ensured the audience could see all the reations of the characters. A medium close-up to a close-up shot was used as scary effect as it jumped from a medium close-up to a close-up to zoom in on a women who was lying on the floor.

Emma
Emma was a completly different TV Drama to Holby City as Emma is a period drama. Therefore it is interesting to compare the different use of shots. At the begining of Emma an establishing shot was used to show that the TV Drama Emma is set in a rural area as in this shot you can see fields and trees and also that it was set in a different era as there is a man in the shot who is wearing old fashioned clothing and holding a cane. There is also an old fashioned looking mansion in the shot. A mid shot showed a women playing the piano however this was an image in one of the characters minds and there is an extremly bright light on the lady playing to piano to create an unrealistic and dream like effect. A two shot showed one girl in the background crying and another girl (Emma) sitting closer to the camera looking at her. This makes the audience also want to see what Emma is looking at as well as making the audience feel sorry for the girl who is crying. Another mid shot was taken from a low angle looking up at a women entering a church. The shot was taken through the heads of other people sitting down. This made her seem more superior to the other people sitting down. She is also wearing a bright yellow dress which contributes to how she appears more superior to the other characters. Another mid shot was of a women sitting in the front row of a church and two other women sitting behind her but to the left so that the audience can see all three characters. The two girls sitting behind are talking about the women sitting in front. This makes the audience feel as though they know more than the characters because the girl in front can't see the girls behind her talking, however the girls talking cannot see the women infront's reaction. One mid shot is taken from a low angle looking up at Emma. She is dressed up nicely and from this the audience can depict that this angle was used to make the audience notice something different about her and notice that she looked nicer than usual. This shot also gives her more authority and elegance. After watching Emma I realised how many mid shots were used, I think this is because the director wanted to give the audience a real idea of what this time period was like for example to show the characters full outfits, the scenary, the houses etc.
